Apex Action Supports 39th World Worm Charming Charming Championships to Help Raise Money For New School Library
On Saturday 23rd June Willaston Primary Academy & Friends of Willaston School Association (FWSA) hosted their 39th World Worm Charming Championships to raise funds to resource their new school library.
As well as the Worm Charming competition, an exciting finale to the day was a Grand Prize Raffle draw. Apex were delighted to donate a Rainy-Day Box jam-packed with arts & craft materials as a prize. Visitors also enjoyed summer fete games, a BBQ, fun inflatables, charity stalls, & food & drink outlets.
The competition is renowned worldwide with participants previously travelling from India, South Africa and the Philippines to join the hundreds of local residents. During this unusual event, contestants in each of the 144 3×3 metre square plots, had exactly 30 minutes to extract as many worms out of the soil as possible. Charming techniques included vibrating a garden fork, jumping up & down, banging the ground with cricket bats, and playing music.
Prizes awarded included the Heaviest Worm & Most Promising Newcomer, as well as The Championship trophy for the Most Worms, although due to the extreme heat & dryness the winners were only able to collect 11 worms this year. A great effort in very tough conditions.
With the help of sponsors & supporters the FWSA raised a magnificent £3750, a great start to funding their library project!
